Midnight Blog

I should be cleaning. And I will. MAJOR yard sale tomorrow at 485 N. State Street. So much to do. I want opinions if anyone is willing to share them. Everyone has seen the TLC show Extreme Couponing. And we have all noticed the multitude of bandwagon blogs out there offering FREE stuff everywhere. Obviously nothing is free. But it can be drastically reduced by utilizing certain tactics and rewards. I am going to ask a couple questions. If you are so inclined, please feel free to answer honestly.

1: I do not advertise myself as an Extreme couponer. Hopefully just as a person who wants to help change the way people shop to maximize their weekly budget. Do people want to know how to get massive amounts of things like pasta, or ketchup for little money? Or do they just want to know how to lessen their weekly bill, and even get better stuff for less money?

2: Do you want to know about free community events?

3: Prioritize what constitutes the biggest portion of your weekly spending.

Dear Borders, Whatever!

Just from a recession point of view, I don’t feel badly that Borders is going out of business. The good news is I found $65 in gift cards in my daughter’s room while de-hoarding today. (Pre-hurricane yard sale Saturday.) The bad news is they jacked the price up even more than they already were so that the 50% was not exactly wonderful. I mean, I should shut up right? They were gift cards therefore free to me, but this is why companies like that will lose in the long run, and they should.

The good news is that in addition to the 4 books my daughter got, we got Avatar the movie. Awesome flick. I can’t wait to see it again.

The better news is that from cleaning that abomination of a room, I found “Spice World” on VHS, STILL WRAPPED, WITH THE POSTER AND ALL!!! LOL!! Shame on me. What else do you think I will find? Be nice ;)

LMAO!!!!

Okay, Veet facial hair remover WORST PRODUCT EVER!!!!

So these strips are pretty small and in all my infinite wisdom, I tried them on my eyebrows. Not only did they not remove one single hair, the strips did not dry and the gooey wax stuck to my skin, and didn't come off with hot water. So, I got in the shower, used Biore scrub on my lids, and now I look like a mental patient from the broken blood vessels on my eyes.

It gets better.  Every time I open my eyes, my lashes stick to my lids. When I dried my face with a towel, I got lint on my lids. This crap is in my hair and it won’t comb out.

Dear Veet, I hate you. I got this garbage for free and I still want my money back.
LMAOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Stacking Tactics

I want to focus on four major stores here. There are many times when you are able to stack a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon for a like item. When you can combine said item with a good sale price, these things can be close to free, if not actually “pay you” to take the item home.

Target: I have never had a problem with a coupon overage at Target going toward another item. My advice is to be discreet. Do not take your binder in the store. The bottom line is that every retailer reserves the right to restrict their clientele for whatever legitimate reason. I personally do not want to fight the issue. Just don’t advertise, plain and simple.

www.Target.com  Requires registration.

Walgreen's: Word on the street is that Wags will soon be going to a card. YAY!!!! No more shelf-clearing at Wags. Walgreen's has in-ad coupons and puts out a monthly coupon booklet. It is usually by the door. But their policy is much stricter. You can still stack coupons there, but the number of items purchased has to be more than or equal to the number of coupons being used. This ratio also includes the use of previous rewards. Anything scanned counts as a coupon. The only loophole is that sometimes their in-ad coupons count towards multiple items, therefore you can accommodate the ratio because they only have to scan the coupon once for 2-4 items. It can get very convoluted.

CVS: Very simple. CVS coupons are on their site, at the bottom of your receipt, and in the big red Magic Box when you scan your card.

Rite Aid: Rite Aid coupons are in-ad coupons, sometimes on their site or emailed to you, and you can earn them by watching videos and printing coupons. Video values link is below. Also requires registration.

Tisk Tisk

I am going to be very unpopular in the coupon world in about 30 seconds. I am (and have been,) seeing many sites that that utilize coupon information to basically shelf clear and hoard. There is no other way to say this. Shelf clearing and hoarding is basically the most selfish aspect of couponing. Many people claim they donate these items. Well, I want proof. Honestly, if you are going to post a picture of 100 boxes of pasta, Show me a picture of 75 of them going to a food pantry.

This kind of selfishness is going to be the reason manufacturers get REALLY stingy with the dollar value of their coupons. Stores are already limiting your total “like item” purchase per transaction (as they should), and drugstores will likely get equally stingy with their rewards. I don’t blame them. Couponing is not a “Job” in which you get paid $30 to clear the shelves of one product. That concept is basically grotesque, in my humble opinion.

Don’t misunderstand, I have ABSOLUTELY capitalized on the weekly freebie. ONE AT A TIME!! My worst violation was 30 cereals in one week, in which I paid $1 each, and there were PLENTY on the shelf. And believe it or not I am almost out of cereal. I don’t think I would even do that again because I felt too funny about it.

Bottom line, these sites that condone shelf clearing are doing the rest of the consuming population a MAJOR disservice. And they will be the reason couponing is eventually and inevitably ruined for all of us.

Payin' it forward.

Met with a lady tonight. Nicest woman. Turns out we have mutual friends. She has been trying to make a class, but it would just never seem to work out. So I gave her the rundown as I thought a certain tactic would be more conducive to her shopping schedule. She bought me coffee. I LOVE COFFEE!!!

This is not a long story. It really does not have a lot to do with couponing actually. Some people need something that only you can give them. Information, attention, an ear, a hand up in the right direction. I am not going to be specific but this is a scary time in life for me. I made time for someone today when I really did not have it to give, and there was a piece of mail waiting for me when I got home. It is a piece of mail that I did not think I was going to get, and if I did, I was not sure if the information was good for me, or bad. I got a lot going on right now, and this piece of mail just equaled “Jackpot” in the long run for me.

I’ll try to keep my religious beliefs out of my blog for the most part, but THANK YOU JESUS!! Pay it forward whenever you can people. You will get it back 10 fold.

Backwards part 2

It drives me so crazy when I run out of something that I absolutely need, and I can’t find a coupon or a deal. Cat litter. Yeah, not negotiable. If you’re out, that’s just it. So, the day after I made an emergency litter run (that sounds creepy) to Market Basket, I noticed a decent deal on Arm & Hammer (2) 14 lb. boxes for $12 at Rite Aid for the following week. Grrrr. Well, I cashed in on that decent deal anyway, and turned it into a great deal. It goes like this.

My daughter is coming down with a cold ALREADY!!

First transaction:
Zicam, (usually $12.99) on sale at Rite Aid for $8.99. - Used $2Q and $1 previous reward. Gained $4 in Up+ Rewards. Total OOP =$5.99

Second transaction:
Max Freeze Pain Relief, sale $6.99, and 2 Rite Aid 8oz. hand sanitizer sale $1ea. All had equal rewards. - Used $4 in rewards. Total OOP was $4.99. Earned $8.99 in rewards.

Third Transaction:
(2) 14 lb. boxes Arm & Hammer Cat Litter, sale $12. - After $3 in coupons ($1.50 ea.) and $8.99 in previous rewards, I paid one penny. And I have $2 in new rewards.

The moral is, my total OOP was $10.99. That is $1 less than the sale price of the cat litter and everything else was FREE!! That is well over $20 in free stuff for the cat litter I needed anyway, and Jacqueline can have some top notch Zicam instead of “low budget taste like garbage whatever.” I love couponing.

Coupon Addicts

Since I have been couponing, I admit, I have a bit of a stockpile of certain things. For those of you who think couponing to this extreme leads to hoarding, I won’t even argue with you. Some people do hoard. They are not satisfied until they can get 20 units of a certain product for next to nothing. That is overkill for sure, and selfish in my humble opinion. There is a line between the thrill of getting a few things free, and being outright addicted to it. This is where I think that line is drawn. Ask yourself...

Do you find it easier to be altruistic when you have more than you need, or do you want to keep it all for yourself and accumulate more? If you have more than 10 of any given non-grocery product, do you make a donation box to give to the church? Do you get upset an excursion does not go your way? In other words, if you only save 75% percent vs. 90% retail, is your day ruined?

Some of you newbies may be laughing. No joke, there are those that get really upset when a store changes their coupon policy. I found myself becoming one of them. It is unattractive. Then I had to reflect on when I shopped differently. The amount of money I spent on almost NOTHING! It puts things into perspective.

Diapers

Many people have a hard time finding good deals on diapers. Some choose to buy generic, while others buy in bulk to get a lower price per unit. The problem with buying in bulk is that if and WHEN your baby has a growth spurt, you may likely end up with a half case of diapers that just don’t fit properly. This is where stacking manufacturers with store coupons enters the picture.

Many times, the 3 major drug stores will have Pampers or Huggies coupons on their site or in their store booklet. You can use these store coupons in conjunction with manufacturer coupons, and even better, some weeks they are also attached to rewards! This means that if you use previous rewards toward the diaper purchase, you can still use 1 manufacturer coupon, and 1 store coupon, and you will still get new rewards attached to the purchase. This can cut a diaper purchase in half!

Also, look for online specials from ‘Toys r us’ and ‘Babies r us’. If you need to shop there for a birthday, you might as well get some free diapers!

Meat and Produce and Dairy, OH MY!!

It seems when you start couponing, that most of the food items for which these coupons apply are processed foods, or items that you do not use. It also seems that it is rather difficult to save money on fresh produce, meat, and dairy. While this is often true, there are ways to cut down on the items that SHOULD be incorporated into your daily diet, rather than chemically littered lazy man meals. Here are a few suggestions.

Meat-
If you are able to shop early in the morning, or later at night, after the rush, the meat department often tags (coupons) certain items at a discount. Sometimes these discounts are as much as 50%. There is nothing wrong with buying this meat, albeit, there have been some cuts that are less than appealing. Most of the time the meat department simply has to move these products for new inventory. I paw around and have a lot of success with finding one beef product, one poultry, and one pork. I use one that night and freeze the other two. I do not do this with fish (personal choice.) But if you can score three meals worth once a week with this method, you will notice your weekly cost of dinner, shrink.

Produce-
My biggest advice to cutting your produce spending is to shop seasonally. Americans are spoiled. They want strawberries when they are out of season. Well, they are going to pay $4.99 for a 16 oz. package, that isn’t even ripe. However, there are other ways to save on produce. Some packaged bags of produce, ie. Fresh Express Salad, or Eat Smart cut vegetables go on BOGO sales. When you see this happen, go to the manufacturer sites and look for a coupon. You will be surprised at the ratio in which you can score. And if it is under $1, the coupon will likely double at Shaw’s.

Dairy-

I don’t recommend freezing much dairy (although some people do it.) It takes up too much of the freezer for it to be cost effective.  I look for cereal deals in which a certain criteria can be met to get a free gallon of milk. For example, at Shaw’s last week, General Mills sponsored a deal for a free gallon of milk on the purchase of certain cereals and Nature Valley Granola bars (4/$10.) Well, you KNOW I double couponed my 4 items down to $5.20. That means the retail value of the cereal, the bars, and the milk was approximately $15. I paid 1/3.

There are coupons for milk and other dairy items, but I rarely use them unless the sale price and coupon is less than the cost of the store brand.  However, the coupons are worth keeping, as it does happen from time to time.

I just don't have the time to clip coupons.

Many people do not want to clip coupons, or compare prices because they claim they do not have the time. But the time they spend shopping impulsively when they run out of something, is just about equivalent to the time it would take to plan the trip. Consider the price matching option.

If you are a one-stop-shopper, it behooves you to know the price of the competition, ie. drug stores, so that you may incorporate their rewards into the sale price of a price matched item at Walmart. That’s right! On single item sales attached to rewards (for example Pro Glide razors, $10 w/ $5 in rewards) = $5 price-matched. What if you had the $4 coupon P&G puts out almost every month? That’s right!! That is how a $10 item turns into $1.

Still not convinced? Ask yourself a few questions.

If your small grocery list takes a half hour to write, but it saves you $25, is it worth it?

If your mediocre list takes an hour to write, but it saved you $50, is it worth the time?

If you have a family of 4 or more, and you go shopping once or twice a week, at the most, would you spend an hour and a half price matching to save $100 a week? I would.

Practical and Ethical Couponing.

I think there is an art to couponing. Most people who do it well think the same. But my interpretation of the ethics may differ than someone else. At the risk of alienating certain readers, I want to say straight up, I think shelf clearing is absolutely wrong. No excuses. That being said, I would like to offer some tips about how to coupon practically and ethically.

Many people are beginning to realize that their savings are considerably better when they focus on smaller trips to the store, two or three times a week, rather than making one large weekly haul. And many people are also starting to think outside the box regarding where it is they chose to purchase certain items. But the cost of gas is certainly a contender in this battle of balance. This is my advice.

#1: Get a coupon buddy. This will help you in two ways. The first of which can be that you carpool once or twice a week, and make your circle around town. Believe it or not, this is SO MUCH FUN! The second way this will help you is that two heads are better than one. I have been couponing for a while now, and I miss deals too. My buddy says “DUH” and points it out. Again, so much fun.

#2: Be organized. You probably have your binder, and that is a great start. But I like to individualize a store plan, if you will. I put certain coupons in an envelope, then in my purse. I know what I want, what I am willing to pay, and I also have a back-up plan if some things don’t work out. Remember, if you don’t hit it big one week, you will the next. Just be realistic.

#3: Realize that everyone makes mistakes. This includes the cashier, AND YOU. I have been at the register before only to realize that I misread a coupon. Decide before hand how you are going to deal with such a mistake. Is it something you really want or need, and is it worth the ACTUAL price you are going to pay? If not, politely apologize, say "my bad" and ask to void it before you cash out.

If the cashier messes up, look at the line behind you. If there is no one, you can ask for a manager. If there is a long line, please consider that those people are waiting. I personally just pay, step to the side, figure out the problem, and get the manager when the line has dissipated. Don't forget, these people are going to remember you if you are the person who makes a scene. I don't want people to think of me this way.

#4: Eat before you shop!! This is the golden rule since the dawn of time. It is one thing to get a coffee for the road, but it is such a bummer when all your savings go out the window on an impulsive binge because you are hungry.

Happy couponing people.

Brand Loyalty?

Are you stuck on the idea that the specific shampoo you use every day, or the detergent, deodorant, toothpaste, razors etc...(you see where I am going with this) that you purchase on a weekly basis, are an ingrained part of your budget, and only when you see a coupon for that specific item, can you MAYBE score?

Let me put it this way. Do you put flavored coffee creamer in your coffee? Is it Coffee Mate brand? Did you pay $3 or more for it? What if I told you I had 4 Bailey’s brand (assorted flavors) in my freezer and one in the fridge? And what if I said they were 50 cents each? Would you switch? This theory applies to EVERYTHING in couponing. Most of the time, the items that are the most expensive, are the easiest to get for next to nothing. But ironically, you have probably been settling for a mediocre product because it was more affordable.

No more. Brand loyalty will hinder your ability to save BIG! If you have allergies to certain things, that is obviously understandable, but otherwise you need to reconsider those preconceived notions of brands that you have used forever. I mean, if something is practically free, wouldn’t you at least try it? I would. I do. ALL THE TIME!

Let me spell it out further. Do you, or your spouse, pay between $15 and $25 for razor refills? Why would you spend that kind of money on say, Schick refills, when you can get a new Gillette system for $1 (2 cartridges with 5 blades)? Or vice versa. Why would you pay $4 every 2 or 3 weeks on the same mediocre shampoo, if you can get a better one for FREE!

This is couponing. No joke. I have the receipts to prove it. For those of you who are new, I do classes once or twice a week. $10 and 2 hours of your life you will never regret spending. But I bet you can think of a movie or two, where you’d like your money and your 2 hours back ;)

Small Business

I spent the afternoon passing out flyers to local businesses, you know, the small guy, to promote local consumption vs. focusing everything on multi-million dollar corporations. My theory is to buy the essentials from the big guy, and coupon swindle sale that stuff down to half or more, so that we can afford to collectively support our small businesses. Is this a Robin Hood theory? Maybe. But I like Robin Hood, so I don’t feel bad.

If you, or anyone you know, runs a small business and would like free advertisement of their weekly sales and specials, please give them my email cpn101cncrd@gmail.com or FB page info.

Tonight I paid $9.19
That is REAL couponing

T.V. Hype

I talk to a lot of people who see the TLC’s Extreme Couponing and want to know why they can’t accomplish what they are seeing on TV. The answer is simple. The grocery stores in the south, and the west, for example, Publix, or Safeway have almost an unlimited double couponing policy. Their restriction on how many coupons you can use, and double on the same product are almost non-existent in some stores. Whereas here, especially at Shaw’s, you can only double 6 coupons per transaction that are under $1, and only 4 of those 6 can be for the same product.

This is why I stress that if it is at all possible and conducive to your schedule and gas mileage,  you should consider breaking up that large, once a week grocery haul, into two smaller ones. This will do two things.

1: It will maximize the number of coupons that you can double on a weekly basis.

2: Believe it or not, it will cut down on impulsive shopping. Or at least it did for me.

When you walk into the store on a mission, you got your coupons, and maybe even a couple back-up coupons just in case, you are less likely to stray from the plan when you know that the goal is to get a certain amount of groceries for SO MUCH LESS!! I don’t know any other way to explain it than the feeling of “SCORE!” Once you get used to “SCORE”, you will never shop any other way.

Backwards

My friend text me and asked if I had any coupons for ‘5hr. Energy’. I could not find any. I asked her how much money she was preparing to drop on a week’s supply of this stuff.  She said $20. “Well”, I said, “I can take your $20 and turn it into 2 detergents and some female products, as well as the 5hr. Energy. Best I can do. Do you trust me with your 20 bucks?” She gave me the green light.

First trip to Rite Aid: 2 pkg. Carefree liners, 1 box Playtex tampons, (like you wanted to know) 2 Arm and Hammer detergent, after coupons, $9. Up+ rewards earned = $5

Second trip: 2 more Carefree liners, 1 box Veet facial wax strips, and (4) 2 packs of 5hr. Energy (at BOGO half off.) After coupons and rewards Total OOP = $11.
Total Retail- Approx. $45
Total OOP- $20

Long Story short, if she had walked into any store blindly, she might have paid as much as $22 for just the energy shots. (They are approx. $5.50 for a 2 pack.) You have to think outside the box sometimes. Some of these products are a means to an end, and they are things you use anyway. If you are going to part with $20, would you rather have half this list, or the whole thing?

Don’t tell her but I kept a couple things for myself  ;)

Binder Lovers

Many people take their binders everywhere they go, including into the store. While I understand this theory, I personally choose to leave mine in the car for a couple reasons. The first of which is binder theft. Pathetic as though it may seem, people steal binders. Especially since TLC planted the notion of F-R-E-E in everyone’s brain, some people don’t want to do the work that is takes to accomplish F-R-E-E. And as you know, nothing is really free. Newspapers cost money, paper and ink cost money, your binder, and all of the baseball card inserts cost money. Some people straight up don’t want to do the work, and if your binder is in an unlocked car, or a grocery cart, and your back is turned, forget it baby. And wouldn’t you be FUMING!! Stealing Newspapers out of the box is bad enough. Anyone who would pay $2 and take ALL the Sunday papers is not going to have a conscience about your binder.

The second, and actually most important reason for me is basically privacy. No one needs to know that I am a couponer. (Well, maybe my cover has been blown for a while.) But seriously, case in point. A friend of mine wrote to me and complained that she and her friend were shopping, binders and all, and that upon checkout, they were met by the store manager and SECURITY! No lie. Were they stealing? NO!! They were just apparently advertising that they knew what they were doing and many store managers resent it when people score (albeit legitimately.) They were even told that they could not use a couple of their coupons because the coupon value outweighed the sale price of the item, even though it is their policy to reduce the coupon.

Now, is this profiling? Yes. Is it discrimination? Ahhh, YES!! Do you want to deal with it or avoid it? I chose to try to avoid it. But, if this DID happen to me, oh Lord, you better step aside!!

Long story short, no one needs to know your business, and I feel that bringing the binder in the store advertises your business. But that is just me.

Pickin' Chicken

I think the best kept secret in Market Basket is the two meal potential of the $3.99 whole cooked chickens under the heat lamp.  I buy at least one a week, and make one white meat recipe, and one dark meat recipe (usually a pot pie or a stew.) Below is a family recipe for the best and EASIEST Alfredo sauce you ever had.

Tip: After you buy one of these whole chickens, make the white meat recipe first, if for no other reason than ease of picking the meat off. The dark meat is greasier and comes off easier when it has been refrigerated for a day.

Alfredo:

2 packages Alouette,  garlic and herb cheese spread (Philadelphia can be substituted)
1 pint half and half
½ pint heavy cream
½ stick of butter
Parmesan cheese to your likening  (be somewhat generous for thickness)

Well, basically you throw it all in a pot on med low, cover and stir occasionally for 30 minutes, until mixture is smooth with no lumps. Be careful not to turn the heat up to speed the process. You don’t want to scorch the bottom. It will ruin the flavor. Add chicken about half way through.

Tip: If you would like to substitute or add a vegetable, please steam it separately and add on top. Otherwise it will become mush. Enjoy!!
